SUMMARY:Those Rocks Are Alive! The Science of Desert Varnish
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Tim Beagley will explore how desert varnish forms\, what it’s made of\, and how it fits the scientific definition of a biofilm. He’ll highlight the research that has helped scientists unravel its origins\, revisit the long-standing debate over its biology\, and discuss the possible ecological roles it may play. The talk will also cover recent studies on the geographic distribution\, classification\, and viability of desert varnish. This presentation is an expanded and updated version of the lecture Dr. Beagley delivered several years ago at Hot Tomato.  \nDr. Beagley earned his PhD in Biology studying the molecular evolution and interactions of animals that make up coral reef ecosystems. He is also a VIP (Volunteers-In-Parks) volunteer at Colorado National Monument\, where he supports National Park Service educational programs.  \nMonument on Tap is a CNMA lecture series that takes the learning out of the park and into the community—supporting local voices\, shared knowledge\, and meaningful connection.  \nPatrick from Chef Shaggy will be hosting a hot dog truck for us! Classic dogs\, chili dogs and Chicago dogs will be for sale. Water and canned soda will also be available. Please come early to order.  \nPlease help support CNMA! Your donation directly supports CNMA programming and helps advance the mission of the National Park Service by providing meaningful special events\, presentations\, and educational opportunities that connect our community to the Colorado National Monument. Donate to CNMA  \nDetails:       \n\nDate: Saturday\, February\, 21\, 2026\n\n\nTime: Arrive at 11:00 am to order food and beverages from Chef Shaggy’s hot dog truck.
