This 5-mile\, 4-5 hour moderately strenuous hike offers a chance to immerse yourself in the Monument’s stunning scenery\, regardless of wildlife sightings. Bring binoculars or a spotting scope to maximize your viewing experience\, along with ample water\, snacks\, layers\, and a packed lunch. \nDetails: \n\nDate & Time: April 3 at 8:30 AM\nLocation: Lower Monument Canyon Trailhead:  From the west (Fruita) entrance of the Monument\, turn right onto Highway 340 (going east); after 2.1 miles (3.4 km) turn right just beyond mile marker #5 onto a dirt road that appears to be a driveway; go 0.1 mile (0.2 km) to the trailhead. Maps can direct you to Lower Monument Canyon Trailhead.\nRegistration: Risk forms must be signed prior to beginning the hike.\nDistance: Approximately 5 miles\, plan for a 4–5-hour moderately strenuous hike.\nBring: Water\, snacks\, layers and lunch if needed.\nNote: Hike may be cancelled or postponed due to weather. DESCRIPTION:The legacy of Colorado National Monument traces back to the visionaries like John Otto\, whose foresight and passion for preserving the beauty of the land led to its establishment in 1911. Over the years\, many others have recognized the significance of this unique landscape and worked tirelessly to protect and preserve it. \nJoin Terri Ahern\, on Colorado National Monument’s 114th birthday\, as she shares her passion and knowledge of this beautiful landscape through photos and storytelling. \nTerri and her husband\, Rick\, moved to the “best slope” in 2000 after falling in love with the high desert canyon country. She has been a volunteer at the Colorado National Monument since April 2006 as a Trail Ambassador\, and assists with special projects in the Cultural & Natural Resources Division and enjoys the annual Desert Bighorn Sheep Count. Terri currently leads hikes for active adults & seniors through New Dimensions Lifelong Learning Institute.  \n\nRSVP’s not required\, park passes are required for entrance to the park.

DESCRIPTION:Join local artist\, Cedar Keshet for an evening of exploring nocturne art and sky gazing at Saddlehorn Picnic Area. A moonlit night can bring peaceful quiet and mystery. Both feelings are evoked in nocturnes\, or paintings depicting nightfall lit by the moon\, stars and lamplight.    \nWe will be creating simple nocturne artwork with supplies provided. No previous art skills are required\, just a willingness to have fun and try a new activity.   \nDetails:  \n\nDate : July 10th at 7:30 PM  \n\n\nLocation: Saddlehorn Picnic Area  \n\n\nRegistration: Risk forms must be signed prior to the event.  \n\n\nBring: Headlamps\, (We want to keep it night sky friendly\, no big lights\, please.) bug spray\, camp chair\, jacket or sweater\, reflective clothing or safety vest\, any portable art supplies you would like\, but not necessary\, dinner or snacks and water. \n\n Note: Park passes are required. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a sunrise morning hike in Devils Kitchen Trail and plein air painting session with our Community Artist in the Park\, Monica Esposito. We’ll enjoy a short\, scenic hike as the sun rises over the stunning canyon landscape then we’ll create our own artwork inspired by nature.  \nMonica will demo how to get started on an outdoor painting\, give tips and techniques for speedy work and some suggestions for quick studies while using watercolor or gouache. All skill levels are welcome! \nMonica Esposito is a fine art artist and registered nurse located in Grand Junction\, Colorado. Lots of water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, sunglasses and a hat.\n\n\nNote: Hike may be cancelled or postponed due to weather conditions. Park passes are required. Carpooling is encouraged.

Lichens are a fascinating and complex life form — a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and an alga\, thriving together in some of the planet’s harshest environments.  \nAs part of our Monument on Tap series\, Cindy will share her deep knowledge and a hands-on look at her personal lichen specimen collection. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a seasoned naturalist\, this event will leave you with a newfound appreciation for these often-overlooked organisms.  \nCindy and her husband\, Stan\, have called Grand Junction home for over forty years. A former microbiologist at St. Mary’s Hospital\, Cindy’s interest in plants began while Stan was off fishing—and eventually grew into a passion for lichens.
