SUMMARY:Nocturne Art at the Monument
DESCRIPTION:Join local artist\, Cedar Keshet for an evening of exploring nocturne art and sky gazing at Saddlehorn Picnic Area parking lot. A moonlit night can bring peaceful quiet and mystery. Both feelings are evoked in nocturnes\, or paintings depicting nightfall lit by the moon\, stars and lamplight.     \nWe’ll be creating simple nocturne artwork with supplies provided by our artist\, Cedar Keshet. No previous art skills are required\, just a willingness to have fun and try a new activity. If you would like to make a donation to Cedar for her art supplies\, please Venmo her @PleinAirCedar . \nIt will be the New Moon on the 23rd of August which will provide perfectly dark skies—ideal for stargazing! We’ll be sharing our space with the National Park Service’s Night Sky Program\, so come ready to explore the wonders of the night sky through expert-led activities\, telescope viewing\, and more. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Otto’s Trial and discover how to use embroidery and thread painting to create beautiful landscape art. Thread painting\, also known as needle painting\, is an embroidery technique that uses long and short stitches to mimic the look of brushstrokes. This program is open to beginners with no prior experience to novice stitchers looking to improve or try a new technique. Katelyn will provide pre-stitch stick and stitch stickers of Independence Monument\, Balanced Rock\, and Devils Kitchen to help beginners get started. \nKatelyn Pierce is a fiber artist\, specializing in thread painting natural landscapes. She began embroidery three years ago as a hobby to have while caring for her first born. DESCRIPTION:Join Sophie Marxer\, our 2025 Scientist in the Parks Intern share information and experiences while launching the first-ever raptor monitoring program at Colorado National Monument. This raptor monitoring program is aimed to collecting key data on nesting success\, territory locations\, and disturbance impacts. \nSophie Marxer has a background in ecosystem management and hands-on experience with wildlife\, Sophie brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to this important new effort. This pilot program was funded by the Park Service and Colorado National Monument Association. \nMonument on Tap is a CNMA lecture series that takes the learning out of the park and into the community—supporting local voices\, shared knowledge\, and meaningful connection.   \nWe are very excited to partner with Colorado Craft Coffee and Beer House. For our event\, they have graciously offered 15% off all beverages for CNMA members. They do not have food on the menu\, but all outside food is allowed\, so please feel free to bring your dinner with you! DESCRIPTION:Dan Neubaum\, Wildlife Conservation Biologist with Colorado Parks & Wildlife\, will share his knowledge and the latest data on white-nose syndrome in Colorado\, as well as recent radiotracking work conducted at COLM to investigate fall roost use and discuss how Colorado bats use rock crevices of many shapes and sizes as roosts\, why they like them\, and what we continue to learn. \nDan grew up in Pueblo and earned his B.S. and M.S. in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University\, focusing on the ecology of bats. After fieldwork across the western U.S. and Australia and eight years with the USGS\, he has spent the past 17 years with Colorado Parks and Wildlife in Grand Junction as a Wildlife Conservation Biologist and Program Manager. When he’s not working with bats and other species of concern\, he’s exploring Colorado’s wild places with his wife and two sons.  \n Monument on Tap is a CNMA lecture series that takes the learning out of the park and into the community—supporting local voices\, shared knowledge\, and meaningful connection.    \nWe are very excited to partner with Colorado Craft Coffee and Beer House. For our event\, they have graciously offered 15% off all beverages for CNMA members. SUMMARY:Flash Flooding in the Colorado National Monument
DESCRIPTION:Dramatic thunderstorms and flash floods are nothing new in the Colorado National Monument. In 1978\, a powerful storm sent a surge through No Thoroughfare Canyon that briefly exceeded the flow of the Colorado River and washed out a bridge on Monument Road. Gigi will share historic photos and accounts of major floods from 1921 to 2010\, along with a short discussion of recent thunderstorms and the high flows they produced.  \nGigi Richard is a water scientist and civil engineer with 20+ years of experience studying rivers and watersheds across the West. She has taught at CMU and Fort Lewis College\, helped found regional water centers\, and serves on two water-related boards. SUMMARY:Those Rocks Are Alive! The Science of Desert Varnish
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Tim Beagley will explore how desert varnish forms\, what it’s made of\, and how it fits the scientific definition of a biofilm. He’ll highlight the research that has helped scientists unravel its origins\, revisit the long-standing debate over its biology\, and discuss the possible ecological roles it may play. The talk will also cover recent studies on the geographic distribution\, classification\, and viability of desert varnish. This presentation is an expanded and updated version of the lecture Dr. Beagley delivered several years ago at Hot Tomato.  \nDr. Beagley earned his PhD in Biology studying the molecular evolution and interactions of animals that make up coral reef ecosystems. He is also a VIP (Volunteers-In-Parks) volunteer at Colorado National Monument\, where he supports National Park Service educational programs.  \nMonument on Tap is a CNMA lecture series that takes the learning out of the park and into the community—supporting local voices\, shared knowledge\, and meaningful connection.  \nPatrick from Chef Shaggy will be hosting a hot dog truck for us! DESCRIPTION:Mountain lions are elusive but essential to healthy Colorado ecosystems. In this program\, Genevieve Fuller shares findings from the Book Cliffs research on how lions move\, what habitats they rely on\, and how they coexist with people. Learn how biologists track and study these secretive predators and how the science guides wildlife management in western Colorado\, including near Colorado National Monument.   \n Genevieve Fuller is a wildlife biologist with Colorado Parks and Wildlife specializing in large carnivore and ungulate (elk\, deer etc.) management. Her career has focused on big game species and wolves across the western United States\, including work with the Mexican Wolf Recovery Program in Arizona and long-term gray wolf monitoring in Minnesota and Yellowstone. She has extensive experience in wildlife capture\, aerial telemetry\, and field research in remote environments\, and is passionate about using science to inform conservation and coexistence.   \nMonument on Tap is a CNMA lecture series that takes the learning out of the park and into the community—supporting local voices\, shared knowledge\, and meaningful connection.  \nPlease help support CNMA! This 5-mile\, 4-5 hour strenuous hike offers a chance to immerse yourself in the Monument’s stunning scenery\, regardless of wildlife sightings. Bring binoculars or a spotting scope to maximize your viewing experience\, along with ample water\, snacks\, layers\, and a packed lunch.  \n\n\n\nPlease help support CNMA! SUMMARY:A Bug's Life
DESCRIPTION:Join Ranger Raven for an engaging and educational Walk & Talk exploring what insects are\, how to identify them\, and learn some of the fascinating insect species found right here in the Monument!  \n\n\n\nRanger Raven Patrick completed a bachelor’s in biology from CMU back in 2023\, where her work took her all the way from Alaska to the Amazon Rainforest. Recently\, she completed a Master’s in Entomology from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. When she’s not out looking for bugs\, she spends her free time hanging out at home with her fiancé and two dogs while watching movies\, creating 3D models\, and selling sourdough bread.  \n\n\n\nDetails:  \n\n\n\nNote: Hike may be cancelled or postponed due to weather. Park passes are required. Carpooling is encouraged.   \n\n\n\n\nDate & Time: Saturday\, April 11th\, 2026\, 3:00 pm \n\n\n\nLocation: We will meet at the Devils Kitchen Picnic Area to go over some safety regulations. There is a parking lot near the picnic area and parking on Rim Rock Drive near the trailhead.
