Her career has focused on big game species and wolves across the western United States\, including work with the Mexican Wolf Recovery Program in Arizona and long-term gray wolf monitoring in Minnesota and Yellowstone. She has extensive experience in wildlife capture\, aerial telemetry\, and field research in remote environments\, and is passionate about using science to inform conservation and coexistence.   \nMonument on Tap is a CNMA lecture series that takes the learning out of the park and into the community—supporting local voices\, shared knowledge\, and meaningful connection.  \nPlease help support CNMA! SUMMARY:Those Rocks Are Alive! The Science of Desert Varnish
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Tim Beagley will explore how desert varnish forms\, what it’s made of\, and how it fits the scientific definition of a biofilm. He’ll highlight the research that has helped scientists unravel its origins\, revisit the long-standing debate over its biology\, and discuss the possible ecological roles it may play. The talk will also cover recent studies on the geographic distribution\, classification\, and viability of desert varnish. This presentation is an expanded and updated version of the lecture Dr. Beagley delivered several years ago at Hot Tomato.  \nDr. Beagley earned his PhD in Biology studying the molecular evolution and interactions of animals that make up coral reef ecosystems. He is also a VIP (Volunteers-In-Parks) volunteer at Colorado National Monument\, where he supports National Park Service educational programs.  \nMonument on Tap is a CNMA lecture series that takes the learning out of the park and into the community—supporting local voices\, shared knowledge\, and meaningful connection.  \nPatrick from Chef Shaggy will be hosting a hot dog truck for us! Classic dogs\, chili dogs and Chicago dogs will be for sale. Water and canned soda will also be available. Please come early to order.  \nPlease help support CNMA! SUMMARY:Flash Flooding in the Colorado National Monument
DESCRIPTION:Dramatic thunderstorms and flash floods are nothing new in the Colorado National Monument. In 1978\, a powerful storm sent a surge through No Thoroughfare Canyon that briefly exceeded the flow of the Colorado River and washed out a bridge on Monument Road. Gigi will share historic photos and accounts of major floods from 1921 to 2010\, along with a short discussion of recent thunderstorms and the high flows they produced.  \nGigi Richard is a water scientist and civil engineer with 20+ years of experience studying rivers and watersheds across the West. She has taught at CMU and Fort Lewis College\, helped found regional water centers\, and serves on two water-related boards. She loves gardening\, cooking\, and exploring the Southwest.  \nWe are very excited to partner with Colorado Craft Coffee and Beer House.  For our event\, they have graciously offered 15% off all beverages for CNMA members. They do not have food on the menu\, but all outside food is allowed\, so please feel free to bring your dinner with you! There is some parking in the front and the sides of the building\, but we are allowed to park in the Jimmy John’s parking lot as well.   \nDetails:       \n\nDate: Thursday\, December 18th\,  6:00 pm-7:30 pm  \n\n\nTime: Arrive at 6:00 PM to order a beverage. Lecture will start at 6:30 PM    \n\n\nLocation: Colorado Craft Coffee and Beer House- 1144 N. 12th Street\, Grand Jct.\, CO  \n\n\nRegistration: Please make an RSVP for each attendee.

SUMMARY:Bats on Tap!
DESCRIPTION:Dan Neubaum\, Wildlife Conservation Biologist with Colorado Parks & Wildlife\, will share his knowledge and the latest data on white-nose syndrome in Colorado\, as well as recent radiotracking work conducted at COLM to investigate fall roost use and discuss how Colorado bats use rock crevices of many shapes and sizes as roosts\, why they like them\, and what we continue to learn. \nDan grew up in Pueblo and earned his B.S. and M.S. in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University\, focusing on the ecology of bats. After fieldwork across the western U.S. and Australia and eight years with the USGS\, he has spent the past 17 years with Colorado Parks and Wildlife in Grand Junction as a Wildlife Conservation Biologist and Program Manager. When he’s not working with bats and other species of concern\, he’s exploring Colorado’s wild places with his wife and two sons.  \n Monument on Tap is a CNMA lecture series that takes the learning out of the park and into the community—supporting local voices\, shared knowledge\, and meaningful connection.    \nWe are very excited to partner with Colorado Craft Coffee and Beer House. For our event\, they have graciously offered 15% off all beverages for CNMA members.
