SUMMARY:Lichens 101: Life on the Edge
DESCRIPTION: Join microbiologist Cindy Carlson for an engaging and educational presentation exploring the incredible world of lichens. Lichens are a fascinating and complex life form — a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and an alga\, thriving together in some of the planet’s harshest environments.  \nAs part of our Monument on Tap series\, Cindy will share her deep knowledge and a hands-on look at her personal lichen specimen collection. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a seasoned naturalist\, this event will leave you with a newfound appreciation for these often-overlooked organisms.  \nCindy and her husband\, Stan\, have called Grand Junction home for over forty years. A former microbiologist at St. Mary’s Hospital\, Cindy’s interest in plants began while Stan was off fishing—and eventually grew into a passion for lichens. For more than thirty years\, she has been studying and collecting these extraordinary organisms. \nMonument on Tap is a CNMA lecture series that takes the learning out of the park and into the community—supporting local voices\, shared knowledge\, and meaningful connection. \nDetails:   \n\nDate: Saturday\, July 26th\, 2025\n\n\nTime: Arrive at 11:00 AM to grab food and a beverage. Lecture will start at 11:30 AM\n\n\nLocation: Base Camp Provisions- 155 N Mulberry Street Fruita\, CO\n\n\nRegistration: Please make an RSVP for each attendee.\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Biology Hike in Echo Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Park volunteer\, Tim Beagley\, will lead a hike through Echo Canyon to survey the living organisms that dwell in high desert canyons. \nThe high desert canyons of Colorado National Monument present a harsh environment where living things seem very creative in meeting the requirements of life. \nDuring the hike we’ll look for and discuss plants\, animals and even microscopic forms of life. Hikers will learn how they acquire water and energy. They will also see how living things get the building materials (atoms and molecules) of life. Finally\, the group will see how living things cooperate in communities to form habitats where they can exist. \nDr. Beagley earned a PhD in Biology studying the molecular evolution and interactions of animals that make up coral reefs. \nDetails: \n\nDate & Time: May 3rd at 8:30 AM\nLocation: We will meet at Devil’s Kitchen Picnic Shelter\nRegistration: Risk forms must be signed prior to beginning the hike.\nDistance: 3.2 miles roundtrip\, plan for a four hour\, moderate hike.\nBring: Water\, snacks\, layers and lunch if needed.\nNote: Hike may be cancelled or postponed due to weather.
