SUMMARY:Desert Bighorn Sheep Hike- RESCHEDULED
DESCRIPTION:Join retired geologist and former park ranger\, Don Regan and retired geologist\, Roger Smith for an unforgettable hike into the heart of desert bighorn sheep territory. Discover these magnificent creatures\, renowned for their powerful horns and incredible ability to thrive in challenging environments.  \n\n\n\nWhile the thrill of spotting bighorn sheep and their lambs is a highlight\, remember that nature operates on its own schedule. This 5-mile\, 4-5 hour strenuous hike offers a chance to immerse yourself in the Monument’s stunning scenery\, regardless of wildlife sightings. Bring binoculars or a spotting scope to maximize your viewing experience\, along with ample water\, snacks\, layers\, and a packed lunch.  \n\n\n\nPlease help support CNMA! Carpooling is encouraged.  \n\n\n\n\nDate & Time: Thursday\, April 9th at 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM\n\n\n\nLocation: Lower Monument Canyon Trailhead:  From the west (Fruita) entrance of the Monument\, turn right onto Highway 340 (going east); after 2.1 miles turn right just beyond mile marker #5 onto a dirt road that appears to be a driveway; go 0.1 mile to the trailhead. Maps can direct you to Lower Monument Canyon Trailhead. \n\n\n\nRegistration: Risk forms must be signed prior to beginning the hike. Cost is a suggested $10 donation- Donate Here. \n\n\n\nDistance: Approximately 5 miles\, plan for a 4–5-hour strenuous hike. \n\n\n\nBring: Water\, snacks\, layers and lunch-We will stop at the base of Independence Monument to eat lunch.\n\n\n\nNote: Hike may be cancelled or postponed due to weather. SUMMARY:A Bug's Life
DESCRIPTION:Join Ranger Raven for an engaging and educational Walk & Talk exploring what insects are\, how to identify them\, and learn some of the fascinating insect species found right here in the Monument!  \n\n\n\nRanger Raven Patrick completed a bachelor’s in biology from CMU back in 2023\, where her work took her all the way from Alaska to the Amazon Rainforest. Recently\, she completed a Master’s in Entomology from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. When she’s not out looking for bugs\, she spends her free time hanging out at home with her fiancé and two dogs while watching movies\, creating 3D models\, and selling sourdough bread.  \n\n\n\nDetails:  \n\n\n\nNote: Hike may be cancelled or postponed due to weather. Park passes are required. Carpooling is encouraged.   \n\n\n\n\nDate & Time: Saturday\, April 11th\, 2026\, 3:00 pm \n\n\n\nLocation: We will meet at the Devils Kitchen Picnic Area to go over some safety regulations. There is a parking lot near the picnic area and parking on Rim Rock Drive near the trailhead. We will hike together over to the No Thoroughfare Trailhead. \n\n\n\nRegistration: Risk forms must be signed prior to beginning the hike. Cost is a suggested $10 donation- Donate Here. \n\n\n\nDistance: Approximately 2 miles\, plan for an 1.5 hour hike.  \n\n\n\nBring: Water\, snacks\, layers\, hat\, and sunscreen. \n\n\n\nNote: Hike may be cancelled or postponed due to weather. Park passes are required. Carpooling is encouraged.
