2024 Monuments and Canyons Plein Air Event

Experience the Magic of Art and Nature at the 8th Annual Monuments and Canyons Plein Air Event

Colorado National Monument Association is excited to host this event with over 20 plein air artists converging to paint the monuments and canyons found within Colorado National Monument and BLM National Conservation Areas.

Colorado National Monument Association is hosting the 2024 Monuments and Canyons Plein Air Event. This is our 8th year organizing the outdoor painting event and fundraiser benefitting Colorado National Monument.

Mark Your Calendars for a Week of Plein Air Painting

The 8th Annual Monuments and Canyons Plein Air Event is set to captivate art enthusiasts and nature lovers from September 29th to October 6th. This unique event brings together 20 talented artists from across the country, who will paint plein air amidst the stunning landscapes of the Colorado National Monument, surrounding Bureau of Land Management (BLM) areas, and the Grand Mesa.

See Artists in Action

Throughout the week, visitors can watch as these artists bring the beauty of western Colorado to life on their canvases. The diverse scenery—from the towering rock formations of the Colorado National Monument to the lush, expansive vistas of the Grand Mesa—provides a stunning backdrop for artistic creation. Each piece of art will offer a fresh perspective on these iconic landscapes, showcasing the region’s dramatic contrasts and rich colors.

Artists will be painting on their own within the designated areas and as a group in two locations. The public is invited to come, observe, and interact with the artists during the “Paint Out” at the locations listed below.

  • Wednesday, October 4th, 8am-11am at the Saddlehorn Picnic Area at Colorado National Monument
  • Thursday, October 5th, 8am-11am at Devils Canyon Trailhead at McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area & Grand Mesa
(More information can be found on our Event Calendar.)

Opening Reception, An Evening of Art and Community

The exhibit officially kicks off with an Opening Reception on Friday, October 4th, at Carlson Vineyards Tasting Room from 5pm to 8 pm. This special evening is a wonderful opportunity to meet the artists, view their ongoing work, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of downtown Grand Junction. Art enthusiasts will also have the chance to purchase artwork, with proceeds going to support important initiatives within the Colorado National Monument.

The opening reception is free and open to the public. Carlson Vineyards Tasting Room is located at 545 Main Street in downtown Grand Junction. The exhibit will remain open to the public on Saturday, October 5th and Sunday, October 6th.

Supporting Art and Conservation

Proceeds from the sale of artwork will directly benefit the Colorado National Monument’s education programs, scientific research, and park service priority projects. By attending and participating in this event, you not only support the artists but also contribute to the preservation and enhancement of the park’s natural and educational resources.
