Celebrating Saddlehorn Amphitheater
The completed Saddlehorn Amphitheater gets a much-deserved celebration
With a morning dedication and evening concert, the Saddlehorn Amphitheater gets put to use celebrating the completion of this project six years in the making.
A New Chapter at Colorado National Monument
On a warm August morning, the Saddlehorn Amphitheater at the Colorado National Monument was alive with accomplishment and camaraderie. As the sun illuminated the towering red rock formations, supporters, donors, and staff gathered to celebrate the completion of the Saddlehorn Project—a landmark achievement for the Colorado National Monument Association (CNMA) and the Colorado National Monument Park Service (NPS) staff. The newly completed Amphitheater is not just a celebration of architecture and design. It is a tribute to the deep-rooted history and collaborative spirit that define the Colorado National Monument.
A Design That Speaks
The Saddlehorn Amphitheater, nestled amidst the rugged beauty of the Colorado National Monument, offers a panoramic view that is nothing short of breathtaking. The amphitheater is a modern design that shares the ethos of the historic National Park Service design concepts. It complements the natural acoustics and stunning surroundings, making it a perfect venue for events that celebrate both the monument’s rich history and its vibrant future.
Encircled by protective juniper trees and with sweeping views of the Book Cliffs, the amphitheater features wooden seats that echo the natural history of the area, while the red cement seamlessly merges with the iconic red sandstone and rock. The design makes a statement of elegance without overshadowing the serene beauty of the monument.
As I walked up to the amphitheater, I couldn’t help but envision how stunning this venue will look under a gentle dusting of winter snow, contrasting sharply with the persistent greens of late summer, which show no hint of yielding to fall.
A Legacy Revived
The event kicked off with the aroma of fresh coffee and the inviting scent of donuts, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Guests mingled and shared stories, their conversations punctuated by the stunning backdrop of the monument’s geological wonders. The sense of community was unmistakable, as everyone present had played a vital role in bringing the Saddlehorn Project to fruition.
The completion of the Saddlehorn Amphitheater aligns with the 60th anniversary of the Colorado National Monument Association (CNMA) and echoes the historic Mission 66 initiative aimed at revitalizing National Parks across America. Mission 66 was a transformative moment in park development, emphasizing modernization and visitor experience. Today, the Saddlehorn Amphitheater stands as a testament to continuing that legacy of thoughtful enhancement.
Voices of the Monument
The air buzzed with excitement and pride as key figures, including Johanna van Waveren, the executive director of CNMA, and Nathan Souder, the Colorado National Monument Superintendent, addressed the crowd. Their speeches underscored the collaborative efforts and strong partnerships that brought this vision to life. Kevin Dowell, Colorado National Monument Facilities Manager and former CNMA board member, Jack Connelly, also shared insights into the six-year journey of planning, dedication, and hard work that culminated in this day. Their words highlighted the historic significance of the Saddlehorn Amphitheater, a site that has hosted countless visitors and witnessed the ever-changing beauty of the monument. The completion of this project not only preserves this treasured resource but also enhances its accessibility and sustainability for future generations.
Adding a personal touch to the ceremony, attendees had the rare opportunity to meet some of the masonry, trail crew, and maintenance staff whose skilled hands helped shape the amphitheater. Their craftsmanship ensures that the structure not only stands the test of time but also harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding landscape.
Capturing the Moment
At 9:45 a.m., attendees gathered for a group photo, a gesture to commemorate the collective effort and dedication that made this moment possible. The photo, destined for both CNMA and Colorado National Monument archives, will serve as a lasting reminder of the community’s unwavering support and the successful completion of a project years in the making.
A Musical Journey Amidst the Red Rocks with Jeneve Rose Mitchell
As the sun remained high in the evening sky, the Saddlehorn Amphitheater transformed into a vibrant stage for an unforgettable musical experience. The early evening concert, featuring the incredibly talented Jeneve Rose Mitchell, was a perfect culmination to a day of celebration and community spirit.
Jeneve Rose Mitchell, known for her multifaceted musical talents, graced the stage with a performance that was as heartwarming as it was breathtaking. Despite the heat, Jeneve played with a smile, engaging with the audience through her music and witty banter. Her ability to play multiple instruments, each with its own name, added a personal touch to her performance, making the concert feel intimate and unique.
The setlist was a delightful mix of Jeneve’s original compositions and well-loved covers, showcasing her versatile vocal abilities and instrumental prowess. However, it was her rendition of “Hallelujah” played on the harp that truly captured the essence of the evening. As her voice and the harp’s melodies echoed off the red rocks, the audience was enveloped in a moment of pure musical magic. The powerful acoustics of the amphitheater, coupled with the natural backdrop, created an atmosphere that was nothing short of ethereal.
We are incredibly thankful to Jeneve Rose Mitchell for her performance and to all who attended the concert. This event was a celebration of not just the Saddlehorn Amphitheater but also the community and partnerships that made such an evening possible. As we look forward to more events like this, we are reminded of the enduring legacy and the new memories yet to be created in this spectacular setting.
Looking Forward
Today’s event was more than a celebration; it was a reaffirmation of CNMA’s commitment to enhancing visitor experiences without compromising the natural integrity of our beloved monument. As we look forward to hosting events, educational programs, and community gatherings at the Saddlehorn Amphitheater, we are reminded of the power of community and the enduring legacy of our natural treasures.
The Saddlehorn Amphitheater is now ready to welcome all who come to explore, learn, and connect within its thoughtfully designed space, continuing the tradition of stewardship and appreciation for our national monuments.
