Colorado National Monument Association Celebrates 60 Years
Cheers to 60 Years: A Milestone Anniversary for Colorado National Monument Association
We are celebrating six decades of supporting our beloved Colorado National Monument. As we mark this significant milestone, join us in celebrating the history and future of the Colorado National Monument Association (CNMA).
Colorado National Monument Association turns 60 this year! What a long way we’ve come, we want to share how it all started and how we hope to continue to support the monument for years to come.
Colorado National Monument is the official non-profit and philanthropic partner to the National Park Service at Colorado National Monument. Our long-standing relationship has played a crucial role in supporting research and education-based initiatives since 1964.
How It All Started
Following the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916, it became evident by 1922, there was a need to supplement the federal budget. Cooperating associations formed to address this need, and citizens have consistently demonstrated their love for national parks by actively supporting the preservation of these treasured public lands.
In 1961 a local natural history association was formed by National Park Service (NPS) personnel and a dedicated citizen group here in the Grand Valley. This was the start of a cooperating association that would continue to grow over the next six decades. In 1964, the association became a nonprofit organization, initially named The Colorado – Black Canyon of the Gunnison Nature Association. The impetus for this initiative within the NPS came from the leadership of then Acting Superintendent Fred Bussey and Black Canyon Supervisory Ranger TJ Fewless, with board members primarily from Fruita, including former mayor Clarence Smith. The association was officially incorporated as the Colorado National Monument Association in 1974.
