Biology Hike in Echo Canyon

Explore life in our desert canyons with Dr. Tim Beagley

Park volunteer, Tim Beagley, will lead a hike through Echo Canyon to survey the living organisms that dwell in high desert canyons.

The high desert canyons of Colorado National Monument present a harsh environment where living things seem very creative in meeting the requirements of life.

During the hike we’ll look for and discuss plants, animals and even microscopic forms of life. Hikers will learn how they acquire water and energy. They will also see how living things get the building materials (atoms and molecules) of life. Finally, the group will see how living things cooperate in communities to form habitats where they can exist.

Dr. Beagley earned a PhD in Biology studying the molecular evolution and interactions of animals that make up coral reefs.
