Join retired geologist and former park ranger Don Regan for an unforgettable hike into the heart of desert bighorn sheep territory. Discover these magnificent creatures, renowned for their powerful horns and incredible ability to thrive in challenging environments.
While the thrill of spotting bighorn sheep is a highlight, remember that nature operates on its own schedule. This 5-mile, 4-5 hour moderately strenuous hike offers a chance to immerse yourself in the Monument’s stunning scenery, regardless of wildlife sightings. Bring binoculars or a spotting scope to maximize your viewing experience, along with ample water, snacks, layers, and a packed lunch.

- Date & Time: April 5 at 8:30 AM
- Location: Lower Monument Canyon Trailhead: From the west (Fruita) entrance of the Monument, turn right onto Highway 340 (going east); after 2.1 miles (3.4 km) turn right just beyond mile marker #5 onto a dirt road that appears to be a driveway; go 0.1 mile (0.2 km) to the trailhead. Maps can direct you to Lower Monument Canyon Trailhead.
- Registration: Risk forms must be signed prior to beginning the hike.
- Distance: Approximately 5 miles, plan for a 4–5-hour moderately strenuous hike.
- Bring: Water, snacks, layers and lunch if needed.
- Note: Hike may be cancelled or postponed due to weather. Park passes are required. Carpooling is encouraged.
