Exploration of American Wilderness

Explore American Wilderness in depth on a hike to Independence Monument

Join Interpretive Ranger Juliet Harland at Colorado National Monument for an in-depth exploration of American Wilderness. What was America’s past relationship to wilderness? What events led to the creation of the Wilderness Act? What is the connection with wilderness and Colorado National Monument? What might be the significance of wilderness in the future? Come prepared to explore these questions and more while taking a beautiful half – day hike up to Independence Monument.

Hike details:

  • Meet at the Lower Monument Canyon Trailhead at 9:00 am; risk forms must be signed before the hike begins.
  • Directions: From the west (Fruita) entrance of the Monument, turn right onto Highway 340 (going east); after 2.1 miles turn right just beyond mile marker #5 onto a dirt road that appears to be a driveway; go 0.1 mile to the trailhead. Maps can direct you to Lower Monument Canyon Trailhead.
  • Mileage: Approximately 5 miles
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate to steep. Hiking/trekking poles and sturdy shoes are recommended.
  • Expected Time: Plan for 4-6 hours on the trail.
  • Bring water, snacks, lunch, clothing layers, a hat, and sunscreen.
  • Hike may be cancelled or postponed if there is rain or weather within 24 hours of start time. Participants will be notified by email if the hike is cancelled.
  • Please carpool when possible.
