Embark on a captivating journey through time as you hike through Upper Monument Canyon, unraveling the secrets hidden within the layers of rock that bear witness to 90 million years of Earth’s history. This geological marvel, like a time capsule, preserves the story of climate change, ancient environments, and the evolution of life.
Join Roger Smith, a recently retired geologist and CNMA volunteer, and Don Regan, a retired energy industry geologist, former COLM park ranger and longtime CNMA volunteer for an awe-inspiring day on the monument.
Hike details:
- Meet at the Upper Monument Canyon Trailhead at 9:00 am; risk forms must be signed upon registration.
- From Saddlehorn Visitor Center, turn left onto Rim Rock Drive and proceed 3.8 miles (6.1 km) to the trailhead on the left.
- Approximately 3 miles, with 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Plan for a 3-hour strenuous hike – hiking poles and hiking shoes are recommended.
- Bring water, snacks, layers and lunch if needed.
- Hike may be cancelled or postponed if there is rain or weather within 24 hours of start time. Participants will be notified by email will if the hike is cancelled.
- Park passes are required for entry. Please carpool when possible.
