Confluence Center Grand Opening! — 11/05/2025

Discover the fascinating world of lichens with microbiologist Cindy Carlson in this engaging and informative presentation. Learn about these unique organisms that are part fungus, part algae — and 100% essential to our ecosystem.
Join microbiologist Cindy Carlson for an engaging and educational presentation exploring the incredible world of lichens. Lichens are a fascinating and complex life form — a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and an alga, thriving together in some of the planet’s harshest environments.
As part of our Monument on Tap series, Cindy will share her deep knowledge and a hands-on look at her personal lichen specimen collection. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a seasoned naturalist, this event will leave you with a newfound appreciation for these often-overlooked organisms.
Cindy and her husband, Stan, have called Grand Junction home for over forty years. A former microbiologist at St. Mary’s Hospital, Cindy’s interest in plants began while Stan was off fishing—and eventually grew into a passion for lichens. For more than thirty years, she has been studying and collecting these extraordinary organisms.
Monument on Tap is a CNMA lecture series that takes the learning out of the park and into the community—supporting local voices, shared knowledge, and meaningful connection.
